Riga is a small but picturesque capital city. With a choice between the new town of modern buildings and the old town filled with little cobbled streets and pretty squares, you have the best of both worlds.

The main divide between these two sides of the city is a beautiful park. Filled with colour, interesting statues and water fountains. This is a stunning backdrop to the centre of Riga.

The Freedom Monument stands in the centre of Riga. The Freedom Monument is a memorial honouring the soldiers killed in the Latvian War of Independence. It is thought to be a symbol of freedom, independence and power in Lativa.

Riga has many beautiful squares filled with restuarants and cafes. However, Riga Town Hall Square has no eating places but has been a meeting place for centuries. It was originally formed as a market square but now many events are held here.

Jurmala, which means seaside or beach in Latvian is, as it is named, a beach! Jurmala is in the town of Mayori. You do have to pay tax to enter this town, but for a small fee of €2 (August 2015) it is worth a visit.
